Cellucor C4 Original is the world's best-selling pre-workout by volume, which says more about its marketing and global distribution than its formula. In the UK market, better-formulated alternatives exist at a comparable price.

What Is It?

C4 is an American pre-workout that became a global phenomenon in the 2010s. It's widely available in UK supermarkets, gyms, and online, making it the most accessible pre-workout for first-time buyers. The brand relies heavily on its first-mover advantage and mainstream visibility.

Ingredients & Nutrition

cellucor c4

Per 6.5g serving: 150mg caffeine, 1.6g beta-alanine, 1g creatine nitrate, and 1g arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG). The formula is compact and the doses are modest — particularly the 150mg caffeine, which is lower than most UK competitors.

Beta-alanine at 1.6g is half the clinical dose. Creatine nitrate at 1g is a token inclusion — nowhere near the 3–5g daily dose required for saturation. AAKG is an inferior precursor for pump compared to citrulline, with poor oral bioavailability. The formula represents 2010s supplement thinking that the market has largely moved past.

Taste & Mixability

C4's flavours are well-executed. Watermelon is clean, Fruit Punch is enjoyable, and the powder mixes well in water. The serving size (6.5g) means you can fit more scoops if needed — some experienced users take a double serve for the 300mg caffeine equivalent. Mixability is excellent.

Effectiveness

At the standard dose, the 150mg caffeine provides mild energy — useful for those sensitive to stimulants but underwhelming for experienced pre-workout users. The other compounds at these doses contribute marginally. C4 is effective as an entry-level energy supplement but doesn't genuinely elevate performance in the way that well-dosed formulas can.

The main use case is for first-time pre-workout users or caffeine-sensitive individuals who want a mild introduction to the category.

Value for Money

At £26.99 for 30 servings (195g), you're paying approximately £0.90 per serving. For that price, ABE provides a more complete formula with better doses and more advanced compounds. C4's worldwide availability means it's often found at promotional prices in supermarkets, which can shift the value calculation.

      Verdict

C4 Original is a fine entry point to pre-workouts — low caffeine, good taste, widely available. But if you've been training for more than a few months and want genuine performance enhancement, the formula is underwhelming by current standards. Consider C4 Ultimate or C4 Sport if staying within the Cellucor range, or switch to ABE for a significantly better UK-priced alternative.
